Rasoulof was arrested after the disturbances following the 2009 Iranian presidential election. In 2010 he and major Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi were sentenced to six years in prison and a 20-year prohibition from leaving Iran, talking to the press, or participating in filmmaking.
